It’s so…. refreshing to hear that, yeah he’s definitely a well rounded player, but he likes and prefers to shoot the puck. I don’t remember the last player we had outside of Vrby who has openly showed a preference for shooting the puck rather than making a play. Can’t wait to see this kid in the next few years!
Shooting has been a significant sore point for the Coyotes for as long as I can remember unless that's just a wrong impression from up in the stands or on the couch.
Matt McConnell has said "just over the top" or "just wide" so often that it should be sampled and edited into the Coyotes goal song.
The Coyotes were 14th in Missed Shots last season with 648 and they were 29th in Shots on Goal with 1,538. So their MsS/S was 648/1538 = 0.421 which is the 2nd worst in the NHL for last season. The Anaheim Ducks were the one team worse than the Coyotes here.
I should also mention teams shooting % was 16th of 31 teams last season. So on the rare occasion the Coyotes actually got a shot through and onto the opposing goaltender, it resulted in a goal at a fairly average pace.
None of this is really relevant, though. That team is completely dead and gone. We’ve got a brand new one. And I’ve run the numbers on what to expect: PAIN!
I have to ask...how do you find the source data for this? I spent all last season trying to figure out this very stat but couldn't find the source data I needed. The best I could do was 5 on 5 shot attempts compared to total shots on goal...which ended up creating some hilarious stats with some players have more shots on goal than 5v5 shot attempts.
My observation was similar so I was curious if the numbers actually backed up the visuals.
NHL.com - they have a completely illogical platform and lay out the stats in a ridiculous way. But you can just export the stuff and figure it out in Excel.
I had to pull "Miscellaneous" and also "Shots by Type" to get this. Then just dropped the three columns (sorted by team name on the website) I actually wanted (Name, MsS, & S) on a data sheet. You have to do it like that on NHL.com because they don't have a report builder interface where you can pull just the data points you want. Which is kind of a bummer. And they also don't group things together in an intuitive way.
I always dread when I'm wanting to look at a unique stat they have and do comparisons. Even exporting the data is a clunky process at best. Not gonna lie, I'd even be ok if they just gave me a way to download a full data file that has literally all of their data points and I can manipulate the data myself.
I'm gonna go ahead and say that Dylan should be preparing like he wants to make the team this year, but he will want no part in actually playing on it.
He averaged 4.25 shots on goal in this abbreviated WHL season.
Nerd.
Named after Bob Dylan? Or Dylan Thomas?
If Dylan Thomas then a tie in with “ The hand that signed the paper” in relation to his Coyote signing would be apt? ..... no, ok.
I got nuthin'.

As long as he hits the net..

How's THAT for nerdy Craig! haha :)
Bar down, top shelf nerdy bid. Great stuff though

Hmmm, I'll have to do more fidgeting with it. But fair enough. Thanks!
