This was great. It was interesting to hear the perspective of a smaller player about how the rule changes impacted his game.
As a side note, it was great to see that one of his sons is at Mercyhurst. I went to Gannon University, which was 29 blocks north and a little west of Mercyhurst (their campus is on 38th Street, and Gannon's started on 9th street back in the day (I think it starts on 10th Street now, not that anyone cares). Mercyhurst desperately wanted to have a rivalry with Gannon in the sports they competed in (mainly basketball), but a) they were not as good as Gannon back then and b) Gannon students did not care about Mercyhurst in the least. Our rival was Edinboro.
They had a club hockey team back then (early 90s), as did Gannon. Glad to see a D1 program in Erie.
I student taught at Mercyhurst Prep, as a side note, so I spent some time on their campus. Nice little campus. Very traditional liberal arts school. Gannon is a more urban campus. The freshman girls' dorm was right across the street from the county jail. But that is a story for another time.
If you met him in person you could not help but root for him. I had the pleasure a few times to chat with him at fan events and he was so nice. Glad things have gone well for him and his family
I remember meeting Danny Brière at the Coyotes Carnival years ago with my family. It had to be in '99 or '00. He was so nice. And I'm pretty sure he signed like 10 things for us.
My sister and my mom's favorite players back then were Nikolai Khabibulin and Teppo Numminen, respectively. But they both had Brière as their second.
Brière was also one of the reasons I wanted to play center. I thought it was so cool seeing a smaller guy like that match up the bigger players.
Briere is one of the biggest what-ifs in a series of horrible decisions by the Coyotes from 2001 (with the purchase by Steve Ellman being one bookend) to 2019 (the purchase by Meruelo, which I'm treating as the other bookend, at least for now).
Who doesn't love Danny?
Seriously.
Great article! Such a gentleman, yes, I'm still pissed they traded him..ugh! Happy he is doing well and he will always be a Coyote in my heart
Danny is on the all-time good guy list.

First coyote I ever really fell in love with. Those fist pump cellys were fun to imitate on the pond!
Love love Danny! I wish I would have gotten to meet him back in the day. Great story, Craig.
Still the worst trade we ever made and I will never get over it.

Agreed on all counts.

The first Coyote I had as a poster on my wall. Loved watching him play and loved hearing what he's been up to over the years. Thanks Craig!

I'm still bummed about Los Arcos
